Education/Ergonomic Consultation

This may include a variety of education sessions and/or consultations. Examples include training in posture, body mechanics, pacing, energy conservation, work simplification, or problem solving around specific job issues as they relate to a worker’s injury.

  • Services are available on an individual basis or in a group setting.
  • We can help develop internal expertise by training trainers within the workplace.

Back Injury Prevention Program (BIPP)

Based upon provincial BIPP guidelines, this is an individualized injury prevention program focusing on patient-handling techniques relevant to the client and job situation. We provide a review of general body mechanics, patient-handling principles and patient-transfer protocols prior to intensive hands-on training. Topics include bed mobility, chair and bed repositioning, and transfers to and from wheelchairs, beds, toilets and stretchers.

Additional features:

  • Performed by occupational therapists and kinesiologist trained in BIPP.
  • Sessions may be individual or group-oriented.
  • We can provide instruction at IOHS or in the work environment.
  • Opportunities for practice, feedback, and problem solving regarding actual work tasks and patients are provided.
  • A minimum of five sessions is recommended for those with previous training. Ten sessions are recommended for those with no training or in situations where endurance is an issue.

We can modify the program for non-institutional settings.

Foot Assessment and Customized Orthotics

A detailed foot and gait analysis is performed by a qualified Occupational Therapist. If required, customized orthotics, are fabricated by an occupational therapist. Several types of orthotics are available to fit a wide variety of everyday footwear.

  • Same day provision of orthotics.
  • Includes a footwear consultation.
  • Foot-care information is provided.
  • Customized sandals are also available.
  • Cost includes follow-up for modifications where indicated.
  • We provide a report to the referral agent.

Lifestyle Counselling

A personal consultation with a qualified professional that entails the discussion and promotion of healthy living. Education in some or all of the following issues may be offered:

  • Active living/physical activity planning.
  • Healthy eating and weight loss.
  • Excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption as negative health factors.
  • Physical inactivity as a negative health factor.
  • Cigarette smoking as a negative health factor.
  • Inappropriate responses to stress as a negative health factor.
  • Motivation and activity adherence.
  • Determination of physical activity preference.
  • Determination of important lifestyle needs and how to achieve them.

Additional features of the lifestyle counselling session include:

  • Specific and realistic goal setting.
  • Self-contracting (to aid individuals in establishing goals, determining factors that will affect their success and aiding them in adhering to their commitment).
  • Use of a variety of tools (i.e., questionnaires, worksheets, educational pamphlets, etc.) to aid in obtaining and conveying information.

Group Fitness Testing

Fitness testing for sports teams or any other interest groups. Components of the appraisal are determined on a group by group basis (i.e., the contents of the assessment will depend upon the type of sport/activity the team/group is involved with).

Design/monitoring of Fitness Programs

Detailed individualized training programs (i.e., aerobic, anaerobic, resistance/strength, endurance and/or flexibility) are developed and monitored by a Certified Kinesiologist. The programs are designed based upon goals set by the individual and Kinesiologist. Routine monitoring of the client's program enables the Kinesiologist to make any revisions to it in order to ensure continued progress by the individual.

Customized Splinting

A detailed assessment of hand function is performed by a qualified Occupational Therapist. Customized upper extremity splints are fabricated for various conditions e.g., Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis.

  • Same day provision of splints.
  • Cost includes follow-up for modifications where indicated.
  • We provide a report to the referral agent.
